we layer slip on the shelves so it can flake off and we only need to re layer them occasionally (like once or twice a year)

Make stilts by cutting a slab into thin strips that are 6” long. Lay 2 stilts parallel to each other flat on the shelf & place pottery on the stilts.

In my ceramics school we used a powder that could withstand high temperatures and we painted the base so that when it came off the powder was removed and not the plate.
