@jyrceramics: After making many vases like this, I find there are several steps to the process: 1. Add clay. Maybe one day I’ll throw with enough clay to alter, but for now I add clay using coils for the flower. 2. Mark out the petals. It helps to know how many petals to make at this stage so I can roughly know how to thin them. 3. Start thinning. The first round of thinning the petals takes around 15 minutes, and can leave them very weak. So I support them with sponges so they’ll dry in the shape I want. 4. Let sit up, then thin again. After it dries for about 30 minutes, it’s ready to be worked on again. And you can get the petals much thinner at this stage.
