Go ahead and read 1984 but make sure you also read ‘Kallocain’ by Boye and ‘We’ by Zamyatin. It will give you a perspective on parallel thinking and plagiarism.

Other great suggestions would be Huis clos by Sartre, Zadig by Voltaire and La Peste by Camus. Masterpieces loved them especially Huis clos.
