According to a long-running survey conducted by education nonprofit Challenge Success, 60 to 70% of students self-reported cheating at least once a month. But the accessibility of ChatGPT has not swelled this number. In fact, a new Pew Research survey found that only 19% of teens who had heard of ChatGPT said they used it for schoolwork. Keep in mind that not all students are using the technology to cheat; some are just using it for general idea development or research. Academic dishonesty was common in schools well before AI bots became a thing. 75% of students said they’d cheated '4 or more times in the past year.' Studies have found that students who feel they have a place in school are less likely to cheat, even if they’re doing poorly. Challenge Success said that teachers should create a 'climate of care' wherein every student knows they’re an individual. They also recommend reducing workload, because stressed-out students are more likely to cheat. Adding in low-stakes assignments could help, too.
