![A tradition has developed in San Francisco politics in which candidates for local office strategically select Chinese names with meanings designed to appeal to Chinese-speaking voters, even if the candidate isn’t Chinese themselves. However, San Francisco announced that it will begin cracking down on the practice by requiring candidates to either prove they were given the name at birth or that the name has been used in public for at least two years. With Chinese people being the single largest ethnic minority group in San Francisco at approx 21.4% of the population, the city has required ballots to include candidates’ English names and their translated or transliterated names in Chinese characters for more than two decades. However, until this point, non-Chinese-speaking candidates were essentially permitted to call themselves by whatever Chinese-language name they pleased. This resulted in a number of non-Chinese candidates donning Chinese names with intentionally strategic meanings in an attempt to appeal to monolingual Chinese voters, rather than opting for transliterations that sounded phonetically similar to their English names. For example, in 2010, Michael Nava ran for San Francisco Superior Court judge with the name 李正平, pronounced Li Zheng Ping in Mandarin, which means 'correct and fair' in English. In 2022, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins ran with the name 謝安宜, pronounced Xie An Yi in Mandarin, which means 'safety and pleasant' in English. Many feel the practice is intentionally deceptive and a form of cultural appropriation.
