Have you ever sent a quote in your service-based business and immediately thought: “Oh my gosh. That is WAY too much.” Maybe you even felt a little sick hitting send. For many divorced former tradwives, charging what our work is actually worth can feel deeply uncomfortable. We’re often compassionate, generous people. We care about people who can’t afford much. We don’t want to take advantage of anyone. And we’ve spent years doing the things we’re now trying to charge for for free. So when we finally realize, “If I’m actually going to make a living doing this, I have to charge more,” it can feel like we’re suddenly asking too much. But here’s what I’m learning: Your discomfort isn’t necessarily evidence that your price is wrong. Sometimes it simply means you’ve stepped outside your old comfort zone. There are people who are willing to pay for the service you provide. And the more often you quote a price, have someone happily accept it, and deliver something valuable in return, the more your brain starts to understand: Oh. This really is worth that much. You don’t have to become greedy. You don’t have to stop being compassionate. You don’t have to stop helping people who can’t afford your full rate. But you do have to build a business that can actually support you.
