@nowthis: A Mississippi grand jury decided not to indict the police officer who shot an 11-year-old child while responding to a domestic dispute call. On May 20, Nakala Murry asked her son Aderrien Murry to call the police when the father of one of her other children showed up at her Indianola home. The man had reportedly left the scene by the time officers arrived. Nakala Murry said that one of the officers, Sgt. Greg Capers, yelled inside for anyone there to come out with their hands up. A statement from the family's attorney, Carlos Moore, said that Capers then shot Aderrien Murry, who walked into the living room unarmed, in the chest. He suffered a collapsed lung, lacerated liver, and fractured ribs. The Murry family filed a $5 million lawsuit against the city of Indianola, the police chief, and Capers. The lawsuit alleged that Capers used excessive force and that the city failed to properly train him. However, the grand jury determined Capers did not engage in criminal conduct. And as a result of that decision, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch said her office will not pursue further action against Capers. 'We are committed to seeking justice for Aderrien and his family, and we will persist in our efforts to ensure accountability through the civil legal process,' Moore said in a statement via NPR, adding that the family plans to pursue a federal civil lawsuit. #aderrienmurry #civillawsuit #police #news
