In an older dog that suddenly starts doing repetitive circling, that's worth watching more closely, because in some cases repetitive circling can be an early sign of cognitive decline or dementia rather than just play. People often chalk it up to boredom or anxiety, and honestly, sometimes that's exactly it, a dog with too much energy and nothing to burn it on. But it really depends on the individual. My own two are a good example: one will bolt around the park for hours, the other just wants a quick swim and a roll in the grass. Same household, completely different energy.
