You missed out two key things, the first is on the thermometer there is a little indent or line or mark which is where the reading is taken, so the bottom of the thermometer can touch the bottom or side of the glass, the second is you don’t want to use a pair of pliers or similar, the thermometer should come with a specialised tool (or you can buy or 3D print one) which will turn that nut at the bottom of the reading gauge. You could if you don’t have one, use a spanner. But never pliers.
