![In 2002, @CarlosSantanaOfficial sought to follow up the massive success of his 1999 comeback ‘Supernatural’ with ‘Shaman,’ another Clive Davis-guided album pairing the guitarist with many of the era’s biggest stars. The lead single was “The Game Of Love,” and it’s got quite a history. Gregg Alexander, the New Radicals mastermind who was just beginning to transition into a behind-the-scenes songwriting career, co-wrote and co-produced “The Game Of Love.” He also recorded the original vocal, and his version was supposed to appear on ‘Shaman.’ Davis, the music-business legend who passed away last month, thought it would work better with a female singer. Tina Turner then recorded the song, but she didn’t want to make a video for it. Macy Gray was next, but Davis wasn’t satisfied with her take. Finally, teenage singer-songwriter @Michelle Branch stepped in. Davis greenlit that version, and it became a #5 hit. Nearly a quarter-century later, Branch has reunited with Alexander for a new version of “The Game Of Love.” It appears on ‘Everywhere And Back Again,’ her forthcoming EP revisiting songs from across her career. This time, Branch shares lead vocals with Alexander, who also produced the track, and there’s no Santana shredding. Alexander says the recording is dedicated to Davis.
