Paul Scholes cut back on his football punditry work to focus more on spending time with his non-verbal autistic 20-year-old son, Aiden. ❤ 🗣️“I made a decision this year because of Aiden, obviously due to his special needs, which you might know about. He’s non-verbal, so he can’t speak. When I say he can’t speak, I think he understands a lot more than we think. He makes sounds, but only people who are close to him know what he’s saying. He has autism, but it’s really severe — because you can have autism and still go to school normally and so on. All the work I do now is built around his routines because he has quite a strict one every single day,” the retired midfielder explained. He doesn’t know what day or time it is, but he knows from what we’re doing what day it is. He’ll be 21 in December. Everything I do now just works around him. Last season, on Thursday nights, I’d do the Europa League for Man United — that’s usually the night I’d have him. He was getting all agitated, biting and scratching, because he knew the pattern wasn’t there. I did that for years, always thinking, ‘I’ve got to stop this at some point.’ So when I had the chance to do the podcast, I thought that would suit me more — well, not me, Aiden.” The former England playmaker co-parents his son with his ex-wife and he no longer lives with them full-time, so he has put the punditry to one side so that he can focus on spending more time with Aiden.
