@aleks_physio: What is Foot Drop? 🦶 📕 It is a complex neuromuscular condition that impacts the interplay between nerves and muscles, leading to challenges in lifting the front of the foot (dorsiflexion). 🔑Causes: Foot drop can result from various factors, including nerve injuries, muscle disorders, or neurological conditions such as stroke. 🔑Nerve damage disrupts the communication between the brain and muscles, affecting the normal function of the muscles responsible for ankle and toe movements. ✅ Symptoms: The hallmark symptom of foot drop is the difficulty or inability to dorsiflex the foot, leading to a dragging or slapping of the foot while walking. Individuals with foot drop may exhibit an altered gait and experience challenges in navigating uneven surfaces. 🥼Diagnosis: Accurate diagnosis of foot drop involves a thorough examination by healthcare professionals. This may include assessing gait patterns, muscle strength, and reflexes. Additionally, imaging studies such as electromyography (EMG) or nerve conduction studies may be employed to identify the underlying cause. ‼️Management: Management strategies for foot drop aim to improve mobility, prevent complications, and address the underlying cause. Physical therapy plays a crucial role, focusing on strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, and enhancing overall gait. Orthotic devices, such as braces or splints, may be recommended to provide support and ease walking. 📢In some cases, surgical interventions may be considered to repair or transfer tendons, or to decompress nerves (if the issue is arising from the spine). The choice of management depends on the specific cause and severity of the foot drop. Questions? Let me know below! why doesn't anyone ever talk about the cause being compartment syndrome and then having all the nerves cut? Is mine a singular case?

In college I was very drunk and fell pretty hard and the next morning I couldn’t physically lift up my right foot… it was so crazy and scary… I would keep tripping walking to my classes.. I went to foot doctor and he told me I damaged the major nerve that runs down my leg.. it did heal on its own and haven’t had issues since but that was crazy

Should I go to the ER or a physiotherapist for foot drop? I’ve had a spine injury in the past and I thought I was on the way to healing and now this foot drop happened.

Hi I have severe foot drop and even had surgery. It’s a result of perennial nerve damage. It’s getting worse and I’m falling more frequently. I haven’t found pt or braces helpful and I’m scared I’m going to get hurt by falling and I’m only 50. Can you recommend someone in the US? I live in New York. Thank you!
