IMMIGRATION INTERCEPTS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS The Department of Immigration in Lusaka has detained 26 undocumented Ethiopian nationals for illegal entry. The group was apprehended by a neighbourhood watch team in the state lodge area, who found some suspected Ethiopians inside an overturned Quantum Hiace bus. The suspects were later apprehended in nearby bushes, and preliminary investigations suggest that the total number of Ethiopians was 37. They entered Zambia from Malawi, with South Africa being their intended destination. The search for the two Zambians and eleven Ethiopian escapees is ongoing. On August 10, 2024, the Mumbwa Immigration Office apprehended two Somali refugees for being found outside a refugee settlement without authority, engaged in illegal mining activities. Lusaka Regional Immigration apprehended 36 suspected illegal immigrants in a routine clean-up operation on August 12, 2024. The Department of Immigration has apprehended 73 persons nationwide between August 9 and 12, 2024. Additionally, the Isoka Magistrate Court convicted and sentenced a 45-year-old Tanzanian, Godfrey Philemon Mwambongela, to a fine of K 120,000 or nine months of simple imprisonment for aiding and abetting six undocumented immigrants, including three Ethiopians and three Somalis. Investigations revealed that Mwambongela had been engaged by unknown persons to pick up the undocumented immigrants from a place about 20 kilometers before Kalungu Checkpoint in Nakonde and transport them to Mpika for an agreed fee of K15,000. Five of the six undocumented immigrants were convicted and sentenced to fines of K4,500 to K10,000, or nine months of simple imprisonment for illegal entry. #f #fyp #foryou @Immigrants&Refugees Voice
