So, I decided to run a little real life training experiment with Nova today. I knew she was already past her usual feeding time because I had planned to work with her earlier in the day. Unfortunately, I got back home around 2 PM later than expected and after a long day, I didn’t have enough time to start a full training session. Instead, I decided to observe her behavior around food. I placed her food in the bowl, stood right in front of it, and asked my gateman to open her cage. The moment the cage opened, Nova ran straight to the food bowl and immediately started eating, completely ignoring my presence and waiting for permission. I called her name firmly, and she instantly stopped, looked at me, and waited for a command before continuing. Now, let’s break down what happened. Nova saw the food and made a quick decision to go after the reward before processing my presence or remembering the expectation to wait for permission. This doesn’t necessarily mean she was being disobedient. In fact, it tells us something very important about her training. She clearly understands the “wait” concept during normal training sessions. However, when excitement levels are high and the reward is sitting right in front of her, temptation becomes much stronger. The most encouraging part was her response when I called her name. She stopped immediately and waited. That tells me she still recognizes my authority and understands the command structure. In dog training, we call this a lapse in impulse control under temptation not outright disobedience. The true test of obedience isn’t whether a dog can wait when it’s easy. The true test is whether they can maintain self control when the reward is right in front of them and every instinct is telling them to go for it. So what’s the solution? The answer is not punishment, it’s practice. We’ll continue working on impulse control around high value rewards by: 1.Reinforcing the “wait” command before meals. 2.Resetting calmly whenever she breaks position. 3.Increasing distractions and temptations gradually. 4.Rewarding patience and self control consistently. Every training setback is feedback. It shows us exactly where the next training opportunity lies. Today, Nova reminded me that understanding a command and mastering a command are two different things and that’s exactly why we train. TeamNova #dogfamily #dogloverforever #doglover #doglifestyle
