Unpaid power practice isn’t toxic. This might ruffle feathers… but it needs to be said. My friend and I were talking about how we’ve spent over $80,000 on education. Probably more. We paid to learn.
We took free models.
We power practiced on our own time.
No one was paying us to do that. And now I hear this all the time: “If you assign power practice… is it paid?” Let’s zoom out for a second. When you’re new in the industry and your salon owner or mentor has already invested tens of thousands into education… and they’re willing to share that knowledge with you… You’re not paying for that education. You’re not paying for the mistakes they made.
You’re not paying for the classes they took.
You’re not paying for the reps they did for free. They’re literally giving you access to a skill set that will make you money. Practice is yours. Your growth is yours. Yes… hustle culture can be toxic.
But so can entitlement. There’s a difference between being exploited… and being developed. Most salon owners genuinely want to see their team succeed. But you can’t want it for someone more than they want it for themselves. Growth requires reps.
Reps require time.
And sometimes that time isn’t paid. If you’re building a culture of growth in your salon…
You need clarity around expectations and investment on both sides. And if you’re a stylist reading this…
Ask yourself: am I doing everything I can with what I’ve already been given? If you’re a salon owner trying to balance development, budget, and fairness…
Let’s talk. Book a discovery call and let’s build a structure that supports growth without resentment.
