I tried something similar. One of my cats decided it was easier to P & S in my laundry hamper and wouldn't use the box.

We have this same setup. We also have a small exhaust fan connected where it pushes the air from the box into the garage so we have zero smell.

I did this in my home. I just did a wooden frame and wire mesh around it, like a cage.
