Maybe because, after months of feeling forgotten, being remembered had started to feel like love. When she finally walked inside, Ginny was there. Jayna stopped. "You’re home." Ginny smiled tiredly. "I wanted to surprise you." Jayna looked at the clock. "You're early." "I told you I'd try." Ginny stepped closer. "I missed you." Jayna wanted to say it back. She really did. But her phone vibrated in her hand. A message from Veronica. Goodnight, Jayna. Jayna quickly turned the screen off. Ginny noticed. "Who was that?" "Veronica." Ginny smiled. "Your friend?" "Yeah." She didn't lie. Veronica was her friend. At least, that's what Jayna kept telling herself. Ginny reached for her hand. "I’m glad you have someone to talk to when I'm not around." Jayna's heart twisted. Because Ginny didn't know. She didn't know how often they talked now. She didn't know that Jayna had stopped checking the clock for Ginny... but had started checking her phone for Veronica. And that realization terrified her. That night, while Ginny slept beside her, Jayna stared at the ceiling. She turned toward the woman she had loved for almost four years. She still loved her. God, she still loved her. But somewhere along the way, she had learned how to live without waiting for Ginny. And somewhere else, without permission, she had begun getting used to someone who stayed. Jayna closed her eyes. This is just friendship. But deep inside, she already knew— sometimes the most dangerous feelings don't begin with wanting someone. They begin with simply getting used to having them there.
