South Korea is facing a “deep fake emergency” as a large number of group chats with deep fake porn of women, including minors, has been uncovered on sites like Telegram. Many of these chats are linked to certain universities and schools where users will upload images of women they know and another user will create a deep fake sexually explicit image in their likeness. One of these chats had over 220,000 members. Deep fakes are a global issue, however South Korea is the country most targeted by deep fake pornography, according to U.S. based organization, Security Hero. In response to this, South Korean feminists have taken to Twitter to raise awareness and protest against misogyny. They are calling on their government to act. The News Movement spoke to an online organizer and college student in South Korea about the movement and what organizers hope to gain. The university student has asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons. Some of her answers have been condensed for clarity. South Korean women announced a hashtag movement to take place on Sept. 1, calling for more accountability. On Aug. 30, the South Korean government said it will criminalize the purchase and viewing of deep fake porn.
