![Thousands of protesters gathered in Paris after the death of French far-right figure Jean-Marie Le Pen. The celebration drew condemnation from a government’s interior minister who accused the demonstrators of “dancing on a corpse”. Le Pen divided France in his life and now after his death, with the populist right celebrating him as a visionary and the left labelling him racist. Le Pen had been convicted multiple times of antisemitism, discrimination and inciting racial violence. Marine Le Pen, his daughter and successor as head of the National Rally (the rebranded National Front) learnt of his death during a stopover in Nairobi on her flight back from Mayotte. Although they had not been on speaking terms for years after she expelled him from the party, they had reconnected and she was in tears on the plane, according to France Info radio. Marine had sought to distance the movement from the legacy of Jean-Marie, but the party’s chairman, Jordan Bardella, said “he always served France, defended its identity and its sovereignty.” On the other side of the political spectrum, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the founder of the France Unbowed party, said: “The fight against the man has ended.
