@pickedbypickles: most thrift stores do NOT wash their clothes. they do not have the capacity to do so. goodwill received ~107 million pieces of donated goods in 2021 alone (it’s been 3 years i’m sure that number is higher today) that translates to about 5.7 billion pounds. imagine doing THAT much laundry ?!? impossible. no matter what you hear, you should always wash the items—ESPECIALLY the clothing—that you get secondhand. bedbugs, scabies, lice, fungal infections, pathogens, human feces, vomit, ringworm have all been found on secondhand items. i’m not telling you not to shop secondhand. i’m asking you to please take an extra step of caution and wash your finds before wearing to ensure you’re not bringing unwanted critters home with you. how to get rid of nasties on thrifted finds ? ⬇️ -high heat in dryer for at least 30 minutes -steaming/dry cleaning more delicate pieces -freezing -tying the items up in a sealed bag and leaving them in the hot sun for ~1 week -add vinegar to the wash, it’s a natural cleaner
