Telling infertile people to “just adopt” is an insensitive and oversimplified response that overlooks the deeply personal and emotional challenges faced by those of us dealing with infertility. There, I said it. Adoption is not a default solution nor an obligation for infertile couples to fulfill some societal expectation. It is a complex, life-altering decision that involves careful thought, emotional readiness, financial commitment, and navigating various legal and ethical complexities. Suggesting adoption as a quick fix dismisses the grief and trauma that infertility may bring, reducing our struggles to a “simple fix.” It can come across as dismissive, invalidating our feelings and our journey toward building a family-whatever shape that ultimately takes. Not to mention, adoption itself is far from “simple.” The process involves considerable scrutiny, financial strain, and emotional challenges. While adoption is a wonderful path to parenthood for many, it should never be presented as a duty or as an easy alternative imposed on infertile people.
