@hedgerow_healing: 🌟TWELFTH NIGHT 🌟 Tonight is Twelfth Night, traditionally known as it is the twelfth night after Christmas day, and is actually where the Carol "Twelve days of Christmas" gets its inspiration. Back in medieval Europe, Christmas was a large affair lasting weeks, most usually finishing on the night of January the 5th of the day of January the 6th. After this, most people would finally go back to work. This night was therefore the last night to feast and enjoy the merriment of the season, and was usually celebrated in several ways - some of which are known, and other lesser known! One of the most well-known traditions of Twelfth night is to take all greenery and decorations down from the household, otherwise bad luck was said to fall on that house. Another well-known tradition is Wassailing! Wassailing used to occur anytime between the winter Solstice and the start of Spring, but overtime this custom became part of Twelfth night traditions. Take a look back at some of my previous posts for information on Wassailing. One of the lesser-kown traditions of Twelfth night is the baking of the Twelfth night cake. This cake would specifically be baked for this night and would have one single bean placed somewhere inside the cake, and whoever found the bean would be named the Lord or Lady of Misrule. This tradition is thought to have come from the Roman Pagan festival of Saturnalia. This title Lord of Misrule was appointed to someone who would preside over all the jests, jokes and games in the medieval court. He (or sometimes she) would usually try and cause as much mischief as possible.
