A failed asylum seeker was arrested in possession of aĀ knife, hatchet,Ā hammerĀ and a petrol can outside a school. Both Douk Deng was arrested afterĀ workmenĀ confronted him at Edgar Wood Academy in Heywood, Greater Manchester, on 6 August last year. A member of the public earlierĀ observedĀ theĀ 21-year-old south Sudanese national ā€œbehaving oddlyā€ enroute to the schoolĀ holding a petrol can, with a hammer attached to his belt. Deng was ā€œmumblingā€ as he walked a ā€œfull circuitā€ of the secondary school which was closed to pupils for the summer.Ā Builders working on the site called police. In CCTV footage released by Greater Manchester Police, Deng is seen kicking over a traffic cone, stamping on a roadĀ signĀ and appearing to wave at theĀ workmenĀ who approached himĀ before police arrived. Officers are heard telling Deng toĀ ā€œstopĀ thereā€ and ā€œget on the ground nowā€. Another officer is heard saying, ā€œhe does have a hammer with him as well. And a hatchet.ā€ Deng, who was spotted at other schools a day earlier,Ā also hadĀ a seven-inch knife. Deng, who has been refused asylum on three occasions, wanted to ā€œcreate a scene for attentionā€ to aid his cause, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard. Sara Haque, defending, saidĀ her client’s actions were notĀ ā€œmotivated by any desire to injury or harm any personā€. She said it was aĀ ā€œbizarre and compulsive actā€ carried out at a time when Deng wasĀ ā€œin deep distress having left Sudan and his family inĀ traumatic circumstancesā€. Deng, who has a wife and children, was placed in multiple accommodation housing (HMO) on his arrival in the UK, the court wasĀ told andĀ was unable to work because of his immigration status. Deng, of Heywood, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to a range of offences including criminal damage andĀ possessingĀ weapons and a knife in a public place and on school premises. Deng, who has been in custody forĀ almost aĀ year,Ā wasĀ sentencedĀ to two years in prison andĀ told he must serve up to half his sentence in custody and theĀ remainderĀ on licence. Judge Bernadette BaxterĀ said in her judgement thatĀ the Home Office should address Deng’s status in the UK.
