@rowenahealth_menopause: In perimenopause (the time leading up to menopause) you are still fertile. If you have natural periods and are not taking hormonal contraception the period pattern may be changing, maybe lighter, heavier, longer, shorter. You need to use contraception until 2 years after your last natural period if it is under the age of 50 and 1 year if over the age of 50. All women can stop using contraception at age 55 years even if they have periods. Any bleeding on a hormonal contraceptive or HRT is not a natural period, but a bleed due to the hormones. https://thebms.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/MEN0921351544-005_Menopause-Support-Booklet-5-3.pdf This booklet is helpful. Hi Dr Carys and thank you for this very helpful information 👍🏼 I just turned 47 and had absent periods for 5 months, followed by prolonged period for nearly 10 weeks now. I know HRT such as patches or minipill will help regulate my period but they also come with risks which I’m concerned about. What would you recommend? Any advise is appreciated:))

This is so incredibly helpful! I have endometriosis with bowel involvement and your explanation of alternating IBS type attacks is what I’ve been feeling. I’ve put it all down to the endo but the peri menopause also makes sense. I’ve had a fit test and TVS. I also have had bouts of urticaria out of now where and generally widening hay fever. I had been so confused about the surges also. The lightbulb makes a lot of sense. 💜 I also worried that as some of the symptoms come and go it was in my head.

I’m so saddened that there are no studies looking at memory loss and perimenopause. we’re still in the dark about so much to do with women’s health

Perimenopause here, was given Estrogen gel and Progesterone. I stopped after 3 months as it gave me regular periods which was hell. Struggling with sweats now. what is an alternative treatment? I can't go back to regular periods.🥺

I'm glad this wasn't a drinking game! I'd be very drunk if I had to take a shot for every symptom I've experienced?

I am almost 48 and have been in perimenopause for at least a year. It’s been one of the most life-changing, awful, depressing things. 😩
