@nowthisimpact: On January 6, 2021, then-police officer Harry Dunn defended the U.S. Capitol from violent rioters. Now, on the eve of the insurrection's three-year mark, Dunn has announced that he’d like to return to the Capitol — but this time as a congressperson. Dunn officially launched his campaign in Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District on January 5, hoping to replace retiring Democrat Rep. John Sarbanes in what many anticipate will be an extremely competitive primary race. Dunn gained national attention in 2021 after delivering emotional testimony before the Jan 6 committee in which he recalled the atrocities that he and other officers endured while defending the Capitol. He recounted being physically attacked by the mob and having racist slurs hurled at him. Dunn left the Capitol Police force in December after serving for 15 years. ‘I’ve done all that I can do in my role as a Capitol Police officer,’ Dunn told the Washington Post. ‘It’s no exaggeration to say that we are one election away from the extinction of democracy.
