@the_london_spy: The late Victorian social embarrassment of turning up too early to a society party is brilliantly illustrated here in this painting called Too Early from 1873. The artist is James Tissot, a French refugee to England, who was much more subtle than it appears on the brilliant technical surface. Here he is contrasting the nouveau riche uncomfortable family feelings with the supercilious arrogance of the aristocracy. #thelondonspy #davidharry #londonguide #tourguide #jamestissot #guildhallartgallery #londonartgalleries #arthistory #victoriansociety #beautifulart #embarrassing

Can you imagine. Thinking, everyone will forget the faux and then finding out someone did a formal painting to live on eternally....

And this is why I will NEVER be early to a party. Can’t have a priceless painting made about my embarrassment.

I could watch this man talk for hours. I did this for my partner at the time in d’Orsay. Ended up with a small group of tourists following me.
