Drug Superlabs in B.C. Leave Behind Toxic Legacies, Cleanup Rules Called into Question The rise of clandestine drug superlabs in British Columbia is creating dangerous and expensive challenges for property owners, cleanup crews, and the environment. With operations producing synthetic drugs like fentanyl and methamphetamine, these labs leave behind highly toxic messes, and some experts argue the province’s remediation rules are failing to keep up. Dean May, co-owner of Calgary-based Mayken Hazmat Solutions, has spent 14 years cleaning up drug lab remnants across Western Canada. Recalling one of the worst cases he’s seen, May described a home in northern B.C. coated in thick green dust from a fentanyl pill-pressing operation. “We literally left footprints when we were walking in the house,” he said. While the RCMP has spent millions disposing of chemicals seized from drug labs over the past five years, the responsibility for fully remediating the properties typically falls on property owners. Private companies like Mayken Hazmat are often called in to tackle the hazardous conditions, which May says are more toxic and harder to clean than the remnants of old marijuana grow-ops. The issue has prompted calls for consistent, provincewide rules for cleaning and restoring contaminated properties. The B.C. Real Estate Association has advocated for standardized guidelines to help ensure properties are made safe and livable again. Adding to the problem, May noted that drug labs are now quicker to set up and harder to detect, making it easier for rented properties to be turned into makeshift superlabs without the knowledge of landlords. As these toxic labs become more prevalent and sophisticated, addressing the gaps in cleanup rules is becoming increasingly urgent to protect both public health and the environment. #real #unfiltered #local #stories #community #vancouver #victoria #viral #burnaby #abbotsford #richmond #langley #surrey #tricities #vancouver #rcmp #theft #BritishColumbia #trend #BC
