@principal_lamb: If you’re like me, you didn’t start teaching because you wanted to have each minute of your day fully scripted. In many schools teachers feel like their autonomy has been stripped and they are just cogs in the machine. And that’s a recipe for teacher turnover. So here’s today’s quick tip: Administrators, let’s stop micromanaging our educators. Teachers should be empowered to bring their own ideas and creativity into their classrooms. In my experience, student engagement is higher when teacher personalities can shine. While schools and districts have their own systems and mandates, I think it’s important to provide teachers with autonomy. Here’s how we do it at our campus: 1. Within our classrooms, we allow our teachers to be the instructional leader. 2. Everyone on our team is well planned and we teach bell-to-bell, but what that looks like is up to you. 3. We still have academic standards. We use a curriculum. But we don’t dictate what needs to be taught on what day. We give our teachers the freedom to make those decisions. After all, they know their students best. In my 15 years as a principal, I’ve found that trusting our educators as professionals improves morale and retention. So let’s not micromanage our educators.
