western eq rider here: think of the side of the horse as a keyboard, your leg is key smashing with a fist, spurs act as fingers, just tapping each key

Great explanation! Whips and spurs are another layer of aids, not to mention whats required for that level of sport.

The 2 whips also makes a rider realise very quickly any tendency to block movements or move their hand across the withers 😅

It’s a full body workout for horse and rider to be in such harmony. Anyone who hasn’t done it shouldn’t comment

My trainer used to say that spurs may seem like a weapon, but in an advanced rider they become ptecise and way friendlyer then bare feet.

big misconception is that the spurs and whip are causing pain. if they are they are being used wrong.

Spurs make a HUGE difference. When I was riding w/out spurs I was having to really use my leg on him, once his trainer hopped on w/spurs she barely had to use any leg to get him to respond

These are not weapons at all just aids to guide the way for the horse to understand as they can’t understand our language so they need things like this to help them out!

and this is also good for horse and rider to not get complacent and make sure they aren't leaning too much on the tool used
