@heng7gneh: Hashima Island (also known as Gunkanjima) is 19 kilometres off the coast of Nagasaki. The island was formerly a symbol of Japan's fast industrialization as a world-class undersea mining enterprise. Mitsubishi purchased the then-uninhabited island in 1890 and quickly rebuilt it with contemporary structures and infrastructure. These comprised the first concrete apartment buildings and electric lights. By the 1950s, the population had grown to 5,000 people, drawn by good wages and a distinct mining culture. However, as coal power gave way to petrol, coal prices declined, and several mines, including Hashima, were permanently closed.
