English version: In August 1942, process engineer B. Beketov, who worked at the Special Experimental Production Bureau of the People’s Commissariat of Ammunition, proposed a project for a winter tank with a screw propulsion system, or a snow tank with four turrets. The idea was to make the vehicle’s hull from three sections of Archimedean screws (augers) that would simultaneously serve both as the propulsion system and as the structural basis of the tank, instead of simply mounting screws on a conventional hull. In the author’s view, this would reduce the overall weight and solve a number of problems. The tank was to have four turrets for all-round fire and, thanks to the three-section screw arrangement, would be able to turn in place. However, even at the design stage serious shortcomings became apparent: the driver’s working conditions were extremely inconvenient, the overall dimensions were excessive (requiring the vehicle to be disassembled for transport), the height was too great, and there was no practical point in using a screw propulsion system for a combat vehicle. As a result the project was rightly rejected. Later the Inventions Department of the GBTU KA returned to the idea and prepared a sketch with turrets resembling those of the IS-2, but even in that form the machine turned out to be enormous: the diameter of the tubular hull was at least two metres, the width about six metres, and the calculated weight of the order of one hundred tonnes, which made it completely unrealistic. Screw-propelled vehicles as a concept have been known since the 1860s, and in the USSR work on them began in the 1920s, mainly in the form of experimental prototypes for snow and amphibious use. Military versions, however, almost always remained on paper.
