If Banff + Jasper is on your bucket list… steal this itinerary. This is exactly how I spent 7 days exploring the Canadian Rockies, and honestly… I’d repeat this trip tomorrow. DAY 1: Arrival + Basecamp Setup Fly into Calgary, pick up your rental car, and head straight for Canmore. My biggest money-saving tip? Stay in Canmore instead of Banff. It’s usually cheaper, easier to park, and still puts you close to all the major sights in Banff National Park. Before you do anything else, stock up on groceries, breakfast food, trail snacks, and plenty of water. If you plan to hike, this is also the perfect time to rent bear spray from one of the local outdoor or sporting goods stores. Finish your first evening walking around Banff—great mountain town vibes, good food, and the perfect way to kick off the trip. DAY 2: Lake Louise + Banff Highlights Start EARLY at Lake Louise. And by early… I mean sunrise early in summer if you want parking. This lake is every bit as stunning as the photos. From there, hike up to Lake Agnes Tea House—about 4.6 miles roundtrip and one of the most iconic hikes in Banff. After lunch, head to the Banff Gondola for panoramic views over the Rockies. Ending the day above the mountains with dinner after? Hard to beat. DAY 3: Johnston Canyon + Moraine Lake Once again… start early. Johnston Canyon parking fills fast, and this is one of the busiest areas in the park. We hiked all the way to the Ink Pots (about 7 miles roundtrip), and it was absolutely worth going beyond the lower falls. Later in the day, head to Moraine Lake—but important: you cannot drive directly here anymore. You need to book shuttle transportation ahead of time. Don’t make the mistake of assuming you can just show up. The water color here honestly doesn’t look real. DAY 4: Icefields Parkway Road Trip The drive between Banff and Jasper via Icefields Parkway might be the most scenic drive I’ve ever done. Glacier views, waterfalls, wildlife, turquoise rivers—every few miles there’s another reason to pull over. We also did the Columbia Icefield adventure, which was such a cool experience walking on ancient ice. My advice? Leave extra time because you will stop way more than planned. DAY 5: Jasper Wildlife Day If wildlife is high on your bucket list, this was one of my favorite days. We did a guided wildlife experience in Jasper National Park, and it was incredible. Best wildlife viewing is almost always at dawn or dusk, when animals are most active. We saw elk, bears, mountain goats, and plenty more. Jasper has a completely different vibe than Banff—less crowded, more wild, and honestly amazing for animal encounters. DAY 6: Hiking in Jasper Originally, we had bigger hiking plans in Jasper, but wildfire damage from the previous year had impacted some of the trails. That’s the reality of mountain travel—sometimes you have to adapt. Instead, we pivoted and explored shorter hikes around Pyramid Lake and Moose Lake. Even with the change in plans, it ended up being one of the most peaceful days of the trip. DAY 7: Travel Home One last mountain morning, one last coffee, one last look at the Rockies… then back to Calgary for the flight home. And yes… I was already planning my next trip before I even left.
