@exotic.pet.vet: Time for my #veterinary #soapbox ⚠️🐕 This dog has been exceptionally trained to participate in a #cooperative #blooddraw. Because this dog was so well trained, a thorough physical exam was able to be performed, and the blood draw was able to be done with minimal to no stress. This not only makes it safer for the pet, but the veterinary staff as well. The reality is, most dogs are not this relaxed. For many dogs, the vet is a stressful place where they get poked, prodded, and physically manipulated into uncomfortable positions. Without proper training, this can naturally cause fear and anxiety (not just for pets, but for people too)! If that’s the case with your pet and training is not cutting it, please ask your vet for medications to help take the edge off of those stressful vet visits. Meds like Trazodone and Gabapentin are very safe when used appropriately and can really help make the vet a more positive experience for your pet. A more relaxed pet allows for a more thorough physical exam- getting a good look at the ears and mouth, feeling all the internal organs, and listening to the heart and lungs are much more difficult to do properly in an animal that is worked up and tense. Not only is it for our safety, but your pet’s safety as well, as a stressed pet is more likely to get hurt.
