@thetudortravelguide: This is a famous door in Tudor history! But who was held prisoner behind it? Read below for the answer. 🤔 It once guarded a room in the Bocardo prison, Oxford, where the Oxford martyrs: Thomas Cranmer, Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley, were said to have been held in 1555. The trio were imprisoned there on the orders of Mary I as Protestant heretics. They would later be burnt at the stake not far from their place of imprisonment, just to the north of Oxford City walls, where Broad Street is today. The prison consisted of rooms in a watchtower by Oxford’s North Gate. The gate itself was called also Bocardo Gate. The rooms were over the gate, and there was a box in the church for charitable contributions to the prisoners. #tudorhistory #doorsofinstagram #historicoxford #oxfordmartyrs #thomascranmer #tudors
