@coppersgoldenworld: Roughhousing with dogs can be a lot of fun, but you absolutely must lay down ground rules (including having an “off cue”) and understand the potential consequences. If you personally choose to play rough with your dog, here are a few tips to keep the situation under control: ⚠️ Put the behavior on cue. For instance, I signal I want to play by waving my arms around, lightly grabbing his cheeks, or crouching to the floor. ⚠️ Do not encourage the behavior when the dog initiates roughhousing without the cue. ⚠️ Teach your dog to settle on cue. We use “gentle” and Copper immediately calms down, but other commands I’ve heard include: “done”, “truce”, “enough”, “okay”, “no more”, or “ouch”. ⚠️ Watch for signs that your dog is getting stressed and would rather get out of the situation (lip licking, turn away, trying to get away, etc.). ⚠️ Don’t push the excitement level too high. Take short breaks and allow your dog to calm down on a regular basis. Keeping EVERYONE safe, including yourself, the dog, and others should always be the priority when making the decision to roughhouse or not. Be sure to keep your dog under close supervision while in training and around other people, especially children, elderly, or those with disabilities.
