Yeah the no heat and keeping to similar colors is big. I went from blue to purple to black then back to blue and my hair is very healthy.

a lot of this depends on your natural color/undertones, and your hair type! I have curly, porous hair (I wash once a week) and a light brownish/dark blonde that bleached easy. no heat definitely helps
