Did you know the Long Island Rail Road once had a dog as its unofficial mascot? Meet Roxey, one of Merrick’s most fascinating pieces of local history! According to historical accounts shared by the MTA, Roxey was a stray dog who arrived at the Garden City LIRR station in 1901 and was adopted by the stationmaster. He became famous for riding trains across Long Island, befriending railroad workers and passengers, and even reportedly traveling with President Theodore Roosevelt in his private railroad car to Oyster Bay! Roxey passed away in 1914 and was laid to rest near the Merrick LIRR station, where a memorial still honors his story. More than a century later, this remarkable dog remains part of Long Island’s railroad history. This story was provided by Merrick Library, and I’ll be speaking at the library on November 5 to explore more of Long Island’s history and the stories that make our communities unique. 📚
