Gabbara is the most esteemed and socially accepted form of marriage among the Arsi Oromo people of Ethiopia. This traditional union begins with the process of mate selection, where the father of the groom plays a central role in identifying a suitable bride for his son. Although the son may suggest a potential partner, the final decision often rests with the father, who considers factors such as the girl’s lineage and socio-economic background. Once a prospective bride is identified, negotiations commence between the two families, facilitated by intermediaries known as ketticha or halengicha. These go betweens help navigate the discussions and ensure mutual understanding. The process is further sanctified through cultural rituals like milki, which involves interpreting omens to confirm the suitability of the match, and the miju’uu ceremony, which formalizes the agreement. A key component of this marriage type is the payment of gabbara, or bride wealth, typically in the form of livestock, money, or other valuable goods, symbolizing respect and alliance between the families.
