I can understand the confusion. People who live in California are Californians. Difference is, there isnt an ethnic group and race, called Californians who were there first and being called that first. I was told at some point by an indigenous Hawaiian friend that they would prefer to be called Kanaka. But Im sure there are indigenous peoples who also like Hawaiian. The more you know.

To sum it up Hawaii is not a nation therefore it’s not a nationality. It is one of the states/provinces apart the united states of America. If thus being the reason why if you were from New York and someone asked what you were you aren’t going to say “new yorkian”. The thing is because the culture of Hawaii is so strong that’s why it would lead to confusion. But what he is saying is that Hawaii is a basically a mix of different nationalities (places that are actually nations), so to be “Hawaiian” is to be so many different things. Another reason why he answered the way he answered.

The reporter is using Hawaiian in the same way use Californian or New Yorker to refer to someone from a certain state. Unlike other states, Hawaiian is also an ethnicity so people make a distinction and don’t use the usual demonym we have for other states. Either the reporter didn’t know people only use Hawaiian to refer to ethnicity or he actually thought Tua was ethnically Hawaiian.
