Iceland’s President Gudni Jóhannesson posted that no lives were in danger as a result of the eruption. One Grindavík resident said that as he watched his new home be destroyed live on television, all he could do was ‘burst out laughing.’ Another told local news, ‘Seeing your home burn down on live television is something you cannot easily handle.’ Scientists said that the eruption seemed to be dying down as of January 16.
