I don’t think it’s strange. If you bring your own then you only ever bring 1 per year. If someone else brings yours you just know some people will make cakes for 5 people over the year and some people

we used to take our own cake in NZ but it's hit and miss, some people bring it, some people buy it for you. When I moved to Aus I always used to bring my own stuff too 🤣
