@_aclassic_: @_aclassic_ Saltwater story Featuring @zaniac1 and camera @slaterneborsky On this day at Pe’ahi the swell started off glassy and clean with some solid surf. On the inside west bowl we had all the usuals, including my brother @mat5o running water safety and a handful of big wave surfers traveling from around the world to get a taste of Jaws. My strategy at Pe’ahi usually pulls me outside of the majority of the pack to the North Peak where I know I can catch the biggest wave of the day and maybe even slide into some lefts. Knowing that the swell was on the rise and set to turn more north I knew it would be pretty big for the peak of the swell, I had the intention to catch the biggest wave of the day. Sitting a good 100+ yards outside of the pack I waited patiently with Shaun Lopez, and after some time, just when I was starting to think maybe I’m too far out for the day, sets rolled in from the horizon considerably bigger than anything else we’d seen. I barely made it over the first one free-falling out the back of the wave but luckily not getting sucked over the falls. The apparent wind from the wave before sent a wall of mist like a curtain hiding what lurks on the horizon, and when it cleared, I saw one of the biggest waves I’d ever seen up close and personal and knew that this wave was about to catch me. I changed my stroke cadence from fighting for the horizon to surrendering to the moment I knew was coming for me. I took my last breaths trying to slow my heart rate and dove off the board as it broke right in front of me.
