@missclairebenjamin: 🚨 Handling the gaslighter PART 4👇 🧠 When someone says something that is mean or hurtful and then when we pull them up on it they claim it was a joke, it can be such a horrible feeling. 💡 What makes it even more awful and is when it becomes gaslighting is when this is followed by them telling you that you can’t take a joke, you’re overreacting or you’re too sensitive. ▶️ For many of us it can lead us to doubt our own experience and lead us to question if we are in fact overreacting, don’t have a sense of humour or are actually too sensitive. ▶️ This is exactly what gaslighting does. It makes us doubt ourselves and what’s happening around us. If we don’t recognise this is happening we can react emotionally and try to defend ourselves. This gives our power away. We don’t need anyone else to confirm our experience. Trust yourself. ▶️ Practice recognising when someone is gaslighting you. (Denying what you know is happening and then turning it onto you by saying you’re overreacting/ can’t take a joke/ you’re so sensitive) 🔥 Practice responding calmly and put the focus back on them: “Can you explain the joke?” Then affirm what you know: “It didn’t sound like a joke it sounded like an insult” Remove yourself as soon as you can from unhealthy dynamics like this. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised. You know your situation better than anyone else so trust your instincts, if this doesn’t fit your situation ignore it. #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #communicationskills #corporatelife #emotionalintelligence #managingpeople #difficultconversations #difficultpeople #gaslighting
