@animistory0: The Ascension of Darius the Great Before Darius (b. 550 BCE, d. 486 BCE) founded the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire, Bardiya ruled Persia. Darius and a few others believed this person wasn't Bardiya but an imposter. They thought that a Magi (a wizard of sorts in ancient Persia) shapeshifted and was impersonating Bardiya. Darius and his accomplices decided to stage a coup and overthrow this imposter. When Darius successfully killed Bardiya and stood over his body, a group of Magi from the royal court stumbled upon him. As they were about to call the guards, he explained the situation to them, and after consulting with each other they agreed that he must be telling the truth. All that was left was to put a new King on the empty throne of Persia. Darius and his co-conspirators agreed that they would compete for the throne - the challenge that was set was to bring their horses to a chosen location and see whose horse neighs first at the break of dawn. Whoever's horse neighed first, would be crowned King. Fortune (or careful planning) ensured that Darius' horse was the first to neigh at the break of dawn, and thus Darius became the King and founder of the Achaemenid Empire. The story of Darius' ascension can be traced back to an elaborate inscription on the Bīsitūn (or Behistun) rock, located in modern-day Iran.
