Joy (4 years old) was beaten and strangled to death 💔🥹 Joy King-Castro was found unconscious in her foster mom, Lakeisha Mitchell’s bathtub Aug. 23, 2021, and died two days later. Brevard’s medical examiner counted at least 11 isolated bruises, or contusions, on Joy’s head, seven on her face, three on her torso and at least six on other parts of her body, as well as a mark around her neck that Dr. Sajid Qaiser said was consistent with strangulation made by “either a belt or a piece of cloth or a piece of string or a rope.” Between January 2021 when Joy entered foster care and the day she was found unconscious, she bounced between nine foster homes, DCF said. Foster parents reported that she had behavioral issues. She was placed with Mitchell on June 8, days after Mitchell’s home was lifted from a temporary hold for placements following allegations of physical abuse toward other foster children in her care two months earlier. During the second investigation, DCF found both children “presented with marks,” though the child protective team determined that only one child had evidence of suffering physical abuse, the report said. The allegations indicated that one of the children was seen with bruises on his face and “multiple bite marks.” The child protective investigator and their supervisor “noted concerns that (Mitchell) was the most likely person to have caused the injuries” to the child, the DCF report said. The signs of physical abuse further included facial abrasions, bruising, a lump on the back of the child’s head where hair was missing, bruises on the child’s buttocks and markings that “appeared to be from some type of cord or thin instrument,” according to a Titusville police report made the same day DCF was called. Mitchell was not charged by police. #fostercare #fosterkidsmatter❤️ #sad #speakupdrich #explore #heartbreaking
