The battle of Ia Drang Valley was the first big engagement between US and NVA forces. November 11th, 1965, US intel had discovered 3 NVA Regiments (they kept that secret to themselves). So a small Special Forces team was sent out to find them and look for good Landing Zones and to make preemptive air strikes on the NVA to give time for the 1st Air Cavalry Division to land at LZ X-Ray unopposed on November 15th, 1965. After securing LZ X-Ray an enemy soldier was captured then Col. Hal Moore learned that his 411 man force was up against 2,500 NVA and they had the high ground. Soon after a platoon was ambushed and cut off from the rest of the 1st Air Cav. Then the big battle started, eventually casualties started piling up and ammunition was running low despite the constant helicopter resupply and artillery fire. Col. Moore had to close down the LZ in fear to losing helicopters (which pilots Bruce Crandall and Ed Freeman ignored, both of them would later be awarded the Medal of Honor) called Broken Arrow which diverted every plane to drop their payload on that location, which one case of friendly fire did occur where 3 engineers were KIA by napalm. A relief force was flown into LZ Albany where they suffered even more casualties than at LZ X-Ray. After 3 days the battle concluded with 237 KIA and 258 wounded for the US, the NVA suffered 1000-1700 KIA and 600ish wounded. The man in the video is Joe Galloway, a civilian reporter who is only 1 of 2 to have ever received a Bronze Star with V-Device for defending a Special Forces camp that was being overrun at Plei Me, South Vietnam 3 weeks prior to Ia Drang battle.
