@floriangadsby: This week’s narrated YouTube film, (a link to the full video can be found in my profile’s biography), shows the creation of these miniature mugs from beginning to end. Pots made as presents and prizes to be gifted with copies of my book to people all over the world, the bottom of each being stamped with both my maker’s mark and a symbol of a book, pages spread open. Throwing and finishing 100 vessels at once means there’s inevitably a lot of time spent monitoring the firmness of the clay in order to catch the pots in the right condition for trimming and handling. It’s a boring topic but a crucial one as being able to control how your pots dry, how to speed it up or halt the process to ensure that none of the handle’s crack from drying too quickly is an important skill in itself. Repetition making can be laborious at times. It’s the glazing and cleaning up of the pots thereafter that I find worst, whereas the throwing, trimming and handling is all rather enjoyable. I like seeing the pots all lined up, identical handles all pointing out in a row and there’s an immense sense of gratification that comes from seeing all the work grouped up, all the same, all made with my hands and some tools.
