Theodoros Kolokotronis: The Old Man of Morea Kolokotronis was one of the most important military commanders and political figures of the Greek War of Independence (1821–1829). Born in the Peloponnese into the Kolokotronis family, he grew up in the klepht tradition of armed resistance against Ottoman rule and later served in the British Army’s Greek units in the Ionian Islands, gaining valuable military experience. When the revolution began in 1821, Kolokotronis quickly emerged as the leading Greek commander in the Peloponnese, organising irregular forces and combining guerrilla warfare with the capture and defence of fortified positions. His greatest achievement was the siege and capture of Tripolitsa in September 1821, which destroyed the principal Ottoman political and military centre in the Peloponnese and greatly strengthened the revolutionary cause. He subsequently played a decisive role in the Battle of Dervenakia (1822), where his forces destroyed a large Ottoman army commanded by Dramali Pasha, effectively preventing the reconquest of the Peloponnese. Kolokotronis was not merely a battlefield commander: he understood the importance of political unity and repeatedly attempted to preserve cooperation between rival revolutionary factions, although he himself became involved in the Greek civil wars of 1823–1825 and was imprisoned by fellow revolutionaries. After Ibrahim Pasha’s Egyptian forces invaded the Peloponnese in 1825, Kolokotronis was released and resumed command, helping sustain Greek resistance during one of the revolution’s most dangerous periods. He supported the establishment of a central Greek government and later recognised Ioannis Kapodistrias as governor, while continuing to advocate for Greek independence and political stability. Following independence, however, he became involved in opposition to the Bavarian regency ruling for the young King Otto and was accused of conspiracy; in 1834 he was sentenced to death, though his sentence was later commuted to imprisonment and he was eventually pardoned. Kolokotronis died in Athens in 1843 and became a foundational figure in modern Greek national memory, remembered not simply for his victories but for his strategic ability, resilience, political influence and role in transforming the revolution from a collection of local uprisings into a sustained struggle that ultimately secured an independent Greek state #History #fyp #greece #greekhistory #historytok
