Your mpg might be because you let it idle if you do. My mpg drops in my tdi in the winter because I let it warm up for 15-20 min in the winter

as a diesel mechanic yes it can gell, but diesel burns from the heat of compression not from a spark plug, so when its cold it will get worse mileage

Jelling won’t happen at 18° old a real concern sub -10° if you are concerned I recommend fuel additives and let the engine warm up before driving.
