“This is my Blood… do this in remembrance of me” In Ancient Israel, blood was sacred because it represented life itself. At the first Passover, the Israelites sacrificed a lamb and marked their doorposts with its blood. Death passed over those homes because they were under the sign of the lamb's blood. But the sacrifice was not complete until the lamb was eaten. This pattern of sacrifice and participation runs throughout the Old Testament. At Mount Sinai, Moses sealed God's covenant with Israel by sprinkling blood upon the people, declaring, "This is the blood of the covenant." Then came Jesus. On the night before His crucifixion, during the Passover meal, He took a chalice and said: "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many." Jesus was revealing Himself as the true Passover Lamb. The blood of animals could only point forward. His Blood would truly take away the sins of the world. Catholics believe that at every Mass, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. Not symbols alone, but Christ Himself, truly present. The chalice is not merely a reminder of Calvary. It is our participation in the sacrifice of Calvary made present sacramentally. The blood on the doorposts in Egypt saved Israel from physical death. The Blood of Christ saves us from eternal death. And every time we approach the altar, we are invited to share in the New Passover, receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
